Chemistry Undergraduate at Universidade Federal De Vicosa
Chemistry graduates have a sound understanding of basic and applied sciences, with enough technical knowledge to interact with nature, produce and control synthetic materials, and give a better quality of life to society.
When entering the Chemistry program, undergraduates can choose between the Bachelor degree and the Teacher Teaching degree, or graduate in both. Either way, students can apply for graduate programs at the UFV or other higher education institutions.
Bachelors in Chemistry can work mainly in industries, universities and research institutions. In industry, they can act in the study, planning, development, manufacture and treatment of chemical products; in chemical analyses and quality control.
Teaching Training graduates acquire a solid and extensive academic education in contents of varied chemistry fields, and they are able to teach Chemistry in high schools, and Sciences, in elementary grades. Bachelors in Chemistry can also apply for teaching positions at higher education Institutions. During the program, students can enrich their academic education through scientific initiation projects, provided by CNPq and FAPEMIG scholarship, training in the UFV laboratories, or in other institutions and industries. The curriculum comprises a set number of hours designated for various activities, such as internal and external scientific events, seminars, symposiums and congresses.
The faculty of the Chemistry Department are all full-time PhD professors. The Department coordinates the graduate program in Agrochemistry, in Master’s and PhD Degrees, pioneering in this field, developing research in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry. The chemistry department also counts on well equipped laboratories to support these activities.
The Ministry of Education (MEC) evaluated the program as “good” in relation to classrooms, teaching laboratories, library, and faculty. The UFV Chemistry program and its undergraduates also obtained very good grades in the National Program Examination set by the National Education Council. The Chemistry program started in 1972, with the Teaching Degree Program (recognized by Decree/MEC N. 701/81); later, in 1982, the Bachelor Degree Program was incorporated and recognized by Decree/MEC N. 405/82).
