Department of Chemistry at Cheju National University

The Department of Chemistry aims to cultivate professionals who can cope with the rapid progress in scientific technologies and contribute to the development of an advanced industrial society by understanding the fundamental chemical changes of various substances closely related to human life.
The main majors are categorized into Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Biochemistry. In this Department, students majoring in Physical Chemistry study basic principles of the structure, properties, chemical equilibrium and chemical changes of substances; those in Organic Chemistry learn about the theories of the structure, properties and synthesis of organic compounds; those in Inorganic Chemistry conduct research on the structure, chemical bonds and reaction of inorganic substances; those in Analytical Chemistry deal with theories to confirm the structure, components and composition of unknown substances; and those in Biochemistry investigate chemical reactions and biological phenomena inside the organisms. The Department has not only divided core courses further, but also offers several relevant courses required by the chemistry majors in order for the students to pursue their major in more in-depth and diverse ways.

In addition, the Department is also devoted to applied research on metal-containing enzymes, organic transition-metal compounds, clusters, superconductors and natural chemical compounds – which have increasingly been receiving more attention – and relevant research on life sciences and environmental chemistry. According to the academic requirements of each subject, the Department endeavors to help students understand better by using lab sessions, seminars and audio & video study materials.
