Career opportunities Career opportunities for graduates exist in the chemistry industry (petroleum based, biotechnology, chemical analysis, fine chemicals, etc.). High-achieving students may enrol in a PhD program at La Trobe or elsewhere. Professional recognition Students who successfully complete the two-year program will be entitled to become members of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RICA), which accredits undergraduate chemistry courses in Australia.
Fee type Fees Tuition fee (AUD) Indicative (2009): $16,980 (per 120 credit points)
The main objective of this course is to provide additional and advanced training in areas of chemical science (analytical chemistry, computational chemistry, medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, instrumental methods). Graduates are qualified for employment in a wide range of science-based industries and research laboratories and be well suited to participate in emerging industry sectors such as biotechnology.
Employment prospects include identifying, monitoring and controlling environmental pollutants, designing new drugs and industrial organic chemicals and polymers, developing cleaner food production, inventing new solid state devices, medicinal chemistry and chemical instrumentation. La Trobe University's chemistry graduates have an outstanding reputation and job prospects are excellent. Because graduates from chemistry have a broad range of skills, knowledge and understanding, they compete very effectively for jobs in technological areas. Examples include biotechnologists, ecologists, environmental scientists, forensic scientists, food technologists, medical scientists, research chemists, industrial chemists, analytical chemists and patent examiners.
Year 2009 Award Bachelor of Chemical Sciences Length Three years full-time or part-time equivalent. Honours requires an additional year of full-time study. Campuses Melbourne (Bundoora), Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga
This course is specifically designed to provide a comprehensive chemical science program, which allows students to specialise in areas relevant to the needs of industry, both in Australia and globally. It provides a modern education in chemistry, particularly those areas currently in high demand, including: - Analytical chemistry - Surface science - Synthesis of biologically active compounds. First year studies in chemistry can be combined with other science units, and non-science units, and take students on to later-year specialisations in: - Environmental chemistry (at the Bendigo Campus) - Medicinal chemistry - Solid state chemistry - Water and air chemistry - Computerised chemistry.
Graduates of this degree will have many of the same opportunities as current chemistry and biochemistry graduates. They will also be fully qualified for employment in a wide range of science-based industries and research laboratories and be able to participate in the emerging biotechnology industries.
