Masters in Geochemistry at Stockholm University
The Department of Geology and Geochemistry offers three Master degree programmes: Marine Geoscience, Geology, Geochemistry. Each programme comprises two years of study at the Master level. The introductory course (30 hp) is given jointly for all three programmes and consists of four blocks which focus on methodology, pedagogy, statistics and scientific writing. The individual project can vary between 30 and 60 hp, therefore the number of optional courses offered by the Department may vary between 60 and 90 hp.
arine Geosciences has an additional compulsory course of 15 hp. Therefore the number of optional courses in Marine Geosciences only amounts to between 15 and 45 hp.
A total of 15 hp can be obtained through reading courses given by the other programmes, by other departments at Stockholm University, by other universities in Sweden or abroad. Please contact us for more information and for advice on the choice of courses in Sweden and abroad.
Optional courses are chosen together with the teachers who are responsible for the different master programmes: Jan Backman (Marine Geoscience), Alasdair Skelton (Geology) and Patrick Crill (Geochemistry).

This Master`s Programme – Swedish School of Environmental Chemistry, SSEC – offers an advanced education in environmental chemistry, in close co-operation between Stockholm University and Umeå University. The programme will provide in-depth knowledge of inorganic and organic environmental contaminants; their structure, function, sources and emissions, distribution, transformation and fate in the environment. Geochemistry is the study of the chemical and structural composition and evolution of Earth and its component parts, including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, crust, mantle, and core, as well as extraterrestrial matter, such as meteorites and comets, other planets, the sun, and distant stars. It concerns itself with the distribution and migration of elements within the Earth and its atmosphere. Over time, geochemistry has evolved from a descriptive science to one increasingly concerned with the mechanisms behind its observations.
Geochemistry today is diversified into many subfields, including aqueous geochemistry, cosmochemistry, inorganic geochemistry, isotope geochemistry, organic geochemistry, and trace-element geochemistry. Since most
We form part of the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, and are a dynamic community of geochemists addressing issues ranging from environmental and petroleum geochemistry to wastewater treatment. We specialise in geochemical and biogeochemical research, and in the training of postgraduates in geochemistry.
Facilities: postgraduate-only teaching suites; laboratories equipped for organic and inorganic geochemistry and microbiology; analytical tools such as GC, GC-MS, GC-IMRS, HPLC, LC-MS, XRD, ICP-AES, AAS, FTIR, UV-Vis, PCR, DGGE, thermal analysis and transmitted and reflected white light and UV-microscopy.

Geochemistry - the study of the chemical composition of the Earth and other planets - provides the interdisciplinary background necessary to deal with the many complex problems of our world. Offered jointly by the departments of Earth Sciences and Chemistry, it covers topics ranging from the chemical makeup of Venus to the search for oil here on Earth. Courses include general, historical and structural geology; mineralogy; petrology; and physical chemistry.
A deep knowledge at the molecular level of proteins and their roles in a living cell is fundamental to e. g. the development of new drugs, the rapidly growing biotechnolgy industry as well as for an understanding of environmental issues. Today more than 50% of all drugs have membrane proteins as targets. Furthermore it is becoming evident that misfolding of proteins is a common molecular characteristic of many severe diseases, e.g. ALS and Alzheimer.
